Galvanizing piping is also known as GI pipe. It is a kind of metal pipe being treated by applying a protective zinc coating for preventing rust. The protective coating enable to prolong the metal pipes and tubes life expectancy.

GI Pipe Types Of Processing

​​Generally there are two types of GI pipes which are:-

• Hot Dip Galvanized pipe
• The unprotected raw steel pipe will be dipped into a molten metal bath( zinc coating ). Later it will be washed away the remaining residue with a mixed aqueous solution.

• Cold Galvanizing pipe also known as Electron Galvanized
• The unprotected raw steel pipe will be bonded with a thin zinc layer by running a current of electricity method through a saline/zinc solution with a zinc anode and steel conductor. This type of galvanizing contains smaller amount of coating substant.

Galvanised water pipe is covered with zinc coating, this will increases the pipe's life expectancy and make it more resistant to rust. The gi pipe for water supply is suitable to use on the plumbing work system which is commonly used in household building. It is also suitable used for galvanized drain pipe.

Galvanized Pipe Size

Large Size GI pipe
2 inch galvanized pipe and above are usually connected directly to the main incoming sources of water supply. In a commercial building or high-rise building, a larger GI pipe may use to embed inside the wall structure.

Mid Size GI pipe
20mm galvanised pipe or 1 inch galvanized pipe are usually used to distribute the water supply from the street to smaller house units. 


Small Size GI pipe
3/4 inch GI pipes or 15mm galvanised pipe are usually used to supply water into individual components such as basin water taps.

Galvanized Iron Pipe ( GI Pipe ) Characteristic

• Hot dip galvanized piping has a more rough finishing surface due to obvious dry droplet stains during the dipping process.
• Cold galvanizing has a more smooth finishing surface and a bright reflective appearance.
• GI piping come in many sizes.
• The threaded GI pipe has a external male threaded end design.
• The external threaded galvanized pipe is used to connect different kind of galvanized fitting or connect to others galvanized pipe as well. 

Connecting GI Piping To PVC Piping

​GI pipe and PVC pipe cannot directly connected together. GI pipe can connect to PVC pipe by using suitable fitting connectors. 

Pros And Cons For Using Galvanized Pipe As Conduit Pipe

• GI material can also used as a GI conduit pipe for wiring piping.
• The cost of GI pipe for GI electrical pipe application will be slight higher , but it is still manageable.
• The galvanized piping is well coated with zinc coating.
• However the zinc coating will eventually faded off from outside in , due to long time expose to moisture.
