​Common problems with using galvanized steel pipe 

• ​Galvanized Iron (GI) Pipes are produced by using mild steel.
• The galvanized pipe is treated by applying a protective zinc coating.
• The durability of a  resistance corrosion coating depends on the type of environment the pipes are exposed to, the quality of coating used, and how thick the coat is.
• Under normal circumstances, after more than 10 to 15 years of usage minor corrosion will occur on the galvanized pipe. 
• The rust could happen from the inside out which may cause a small pinhole to leak.
• Galvanized pipe leaking at threads is frequently occur.

Temporary solution

• Partial replacement or patch up is a quicker solution to deal with the rusting leaking pipe.
• This solution is the least invasive and most cost effective of all the options.
• However, this solution may not guarantee the rusting leaking pipe will not reoccur.
• This short term solution can buy you some time to plan for a long term solution.

Long term solution

• ​Change the entire old piping to new piping for the long run.
• Even though, changing the entire old pipe is costly.
• This method is considered wise, especially the old piping life expectancy near the end.
